MANDÉ SILA
SUN NOV 3, 2024 AT 7PM

“First there was Hendrix, then Stevie Ray, and now Habib.” — Bonnie Raitt

Three leading figures of West African musical traditions unite to celebrate Mandé Sila: the heritage of the Mandingo Empire, representing the languages, cultures, music, and instrumental legacy of West Africa.

Malian guitarist Habib Koité is one of Africa’s most popular and recognized musicians. Named the biggest pop star of the region by Rolling Stone magazine, Habib’s music is deeply rooted in the sounds of Mali, drawing from its diverse musical traditions and instruments.

His artistry and magnetic personality have made him an international star, delighting audiences the world over, and placing him firmly among the leading figures in contemporary world music.

Lamine Cissokho, virtuoso of the kora (West African harp-lute), is the descendant of a famous griot family whose traditions date back to the 14th century, passing traditional pieces down from generation to generation.

Aly Keïta gained worldwide recognition for his mastery of the balafon (West African xylophone-like instrument), impressive virtuosity, and unique sound.

Joining the trio onstage will be Habib’s longtime percussionist Mama Kone.
